The City Attorney's Office is legal counsel for the City of Missoula and serves as legal adviser to the Mayor, City Council, Boards and Commissions, staff, the Missoula Housing Authority, and the Missoula Urban Transportation District. The office is also responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor state and ordinance violations committed within the Missoula city limits.
The civil/administrative work our office performs includes defending the City in litigation proceedings as well as providing legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, City management and all City departments with respect to contracts, ordinances and other matters.
Our office also performs prosecution services for the City and is responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor criminal and ordinance violations filed in Missoula Municipal Court. City prosecutors strive to fairly, efficiently, and justly prosecute misdemeanor offenders issued citations and, to a limited extent, counsel and assist victims of crime in an effort to make the City of Missoula a safer community.
By law the City Attorney's Office is prohibited from giving legal advice to the general public.
