City seeks input on proposed sculpture walk in Silver Park

In collaboration with Arts Missoula and the City's Public Art Committee, Missoula Parks and Recreation is seeking community input on a proposal to install a sculpture walk in Silver Park, located at 900 Cregg Ln. in the Old Sawmill District.

A sculpture walk is an outdoor gallery where durable sculptures are placed amidst landscaped settings. Many cities nationwide have designated public areas for these installations, providing accessible art that fosters community identity, pride, and a sense of belonging, ultimately enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike.

The sculptures would be funded through grants and donations rather than public funds. Local art advocates are establishing a community-driven non-profit to raise funds for the purchase, installation and maintenance of the sculptures. The City’s Public Art Committee would help ensure a transparent public review process. Parks and Recreation would manage the park and trail operations around the sculptures with minimal costs to the City.

Residents are encouraged to review the project overview and share their feedback through a public survey open through Thursday, March 7, at engagemissoula.com. Community feedback will help determine if there is enough support to advance the proposal for further public discussion and City Council consideration.

"This is a terrific opportunity to provide accessible art for our community in a fiscally responsible way," said Parks and Recreation Systems and Services Manager David Selvage. "We look forward to hearing the community's thoughts on enriching Silver Park through sculpture."

The project overview and survey are available at www.engagemissoula.com. For more information, contact David Selvage, Parks Systems & Services, 406-552-6262 or selvaged@ci.missoula.mt.us.
