West Broadway Island
May, 2021 Update
West Broadway Island temporarily closed for clean-up and restoration
Please see this media advisory regarding the temporary closure of the West Broadway Island Natural Area. Illegal camping at the site has produced health and safety issues that Parks and Recreation must remediate before the area can safely be re-opened to the public. The closure begins on May 27; the Island will be re-opened by mid-July.
The Clark Fork River is near flood stage at this time. When river levels recede, Parks crews will remove debris and hazardous materials and begin work to restore trails and native vegetation. The approximately six-week closure will give native plants time to become established before public use resumes.
Homeless outreach specialists and the Missoula Police Department continue to work with unsheltered residents to educate them about camping prohibitions in City parks and connect them with local social services and housing resources. MPD enforces the law as needed and plans to patrol the area regularly during and after the closure. Please call 911 to report closure violations.
West Broadway Island is a unique community resource and a place of relaxation and respite for Westside and Northside residents, says Parks and Recreation Director Donna Gaukler. “We look forward to seeing the Island filled with neighbors enjoying another beautiful Missoula summer along the Clark Fork. Our goal is to make the park a safe, welcoming place for all and protect the area’s natural resources.”
Gaukler says the Island will be open for day use only, as it is not safe or appropriate for overnight camping. “We can and will do better for folks experiencing homelessness by working together with all our partners. The City of Missoula does not sanction unsafe living environments for our unsheltered residents,” she added. Residents are advised to call 911 to report illegal camping. As stated above, emergency responders will educate and assist unhoused residents.
