Zero Waste

We’ve all heard the zero waste instructions to reduce, reuse, and recycle. But what does that mean for Missoula? In 2018, The City of Missoula adopted the Zero by Fifty plan and goal of zero waste by 2050.  The plan outlines a pathway to zero waste by focusing on increased access, infrastructure, and education, as well as policy changes.

While we typically talk about our local waste-related emissions that come from our landfill, the mining, production, transportation, storage, and finally disposal of the stuff and food that we purchase all contribute to a significant portion of our global greenhouse emissions. By working with local businesses, events, and Missoula residents to reduce and reuse, and to compost and recycle what’s left, we will make significant progress towards our zero waste goal.

We invite you to visit the Zero by Fifty website to learn about local zero waste efforts such as the Waste Wizard tool, and to read the Zero Waste Plan
