Each year the Missoula Police Department partners with other local law enforcement agencies to carry the Special Olympics' Flame of Hope throughout the state. This event is the largest grassroot fundraiser in the country for Special Olympics. Around 85,000 law enforcement officers participate in this event annually.
The Torch Run began in Montana in 1985. Montana law enforcement has raised over $4 million since then. Since 1999, Montana Torch Run has received 17 international awards. The following were won recently:
- The Sapphire Award in 2008: For programs raising over $250,000
- The Emerald Award in 2011: For programs raising over $500,000
- Fourth highest per capita fund raising program
