Boulevard Tree ResponsibilityThe Forestry Division oversees all activities that take place within the right of way. Per MMC Chapter Number 12.32.070 (PDF), homeowners are responsible for the maintenance of the land and care of the trees, and may hire an ISA-certified arborist to perform tree work. All work requires a permit from the Urban Forestry Division.
Pruning, Hazardous Tree Assessment and RemovalsEach year the Forestry Division performs assessments on many publicly-owned trees. Maintance care is scheduled based on priority. At some point a tree poses a higher liability than a public benefit and is slated for removal. The city removes approximately 100-150 trees annually that fall into this category. Call 406-552-6253 to report hazardous trees or hanging limbs.
Organic WasteThe Forestry Division processes and recycles most of the material produced.
Selecting an ArboristEach year the Forestry Division solicits business information for the benefit of Missoula citizens. This information is very useful in selecting an arborist to perform work on your private trees. Always hire an arborist that is certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA.)
Tree PlantingThe Forestry Division performs many tree planting functions on public lands. With prior approval from the city Forester, property owners may plant trees in the boulevard. Property owners must submit a Tree Planting Permit (PDF) to Parks and Recreation at least five working days before planting. Missoula has published a Desirable Street Tree List (PDF) that can be accessed for planting new trees in local rights of way. Please do not purchase or plant any vegetation in the city right of way without an approved planting permit.
